Text
In Riemst, that white and pale-yellow limestone comes to the surface. And where it remains hidden under the ground, workers bring it up in large blocks of stone. That is how marl caves are created: 300 kilometres of cave passages in total. In Kanne and Zichen, you can still visit these underground mazes.
In Kanne, marl mining already began before the 15th century. The villagers used the stone to build local churches and castles. How do you extract a block of stone from the quarry? Find out for yourself at the exhibition on quarry worker equipment. The walls of the passages are adorned with murals of prehistoric animals. A little further along, you will discover why mushrooms grow so well in the underground nursery and how brewers lager their cave beer.
